Verify Before You Trust

On Tuesday, December 22, 2009, the front page of the Austin American-Statesman lead with the headline: “State and Federal Regulators move on Austin Investment Firm.” Once again, investors were confronted with an alleged scheme to de-fraud them. The firm, Triton Financial, had supposedly raised $50 million while misrepresenting how it was being used and diverting the funds to a myriad of other affiliates as well as the personal account of Mr. Kurt Barton, the CEO.  In addition, Barton, the alleged “money expert” that television station KVUE used in many of its segments, apparently doesn’t hold the bachelor degree from Colorado St. that he says he did, according to an article in Sports Illustrated.
